Of course, not everything always goes according to plan. If you’re concerned about the possibility of an investigation from HMRC, or you’ve received a notice that you are being investigated, you might be (understandably) concerned. But don’t panic! An investigation could be triggered by a number of things, including an irregularity picked up by HMRC when reviewing your filings, or even suspected fraud etc. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve done anything wrong – it just means that HMRC thinks the matter needs closer attention. On many occasions, these turn out to be simple errors, and don’t go any further. Still, any investigation needs to be taken seriously of course, and good advice from a qualified accountant is strongly recommended.
But you might be thinking, ‘hey, don’t HMRC only go after big businesses?’ And it’s true that many larger corporations have been investigated for tax issues, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only ones. With HMRC employing ever more effective technology to identify areas of risk, many investigations instigated by HMRC are completely random, and not based on the size of the business. If selected, you can be asked to provide records, attend meetings on or off site, provide answers to lengthily questions, and ultimately you may need to call on your accountant while things get technical.
